Stay in the Belgian Ardennes
The Belgian Ardennes have a lot to offer in terms of nature and culture. Sports enthusiasts can walk, cycle and cross-country ski in the – sometimes harsh – winter. Le Grand Aleff is located in the epicenter of the Ardennes: the rolling rural area just south of Malmedy and east of Stavelot. In less than an hour you can reach Malmedy by car from Maastricht or Aachen.
The restored half-timbered farmhouse dates from around 1850. The restoration was done using traditional materials such as clay, reeds and recycled wood. A large garden with several ponds and a forest plot with babbling stream complete the area. Host and chef Irene Wieling and host and woodworker Peter van Dorp take good care of their guests
The region
Malmedy is a French-speaking Ost-kanton. It was part of the German Empire until 1918. In the other region of east Belgium German is spoken. The area is located at close range of the High Fens (Hoge Venen), a unique nature reserve. Around Le Grand Alef, meadows and forests alternate. It is therefore the place to walk and cycle. Starting from Le Grand Aleff several routes can be walked and there are also connections to GR paths. For mountain and gravelbikers, routes have been set out in all degrees. (Racing) cyclists have many possibilities, the steep Stockeu climb at Stavelot, for example, part of the annual Liège-Bastogne-Liège cycling festival. Plain cycling is also possible. Hundreds of flat kilometres along the RAVeLs – the routes of former railway lines – have been built in eastern Belgium.
