B&B + Table d’hôte

Warm welcome and good food

Guest house (Chambre d’hôte) Le Grand Aleff receives visitors all year round.  Two spacious guest rooms are

available each with their own bathroom and toilet. The rooms each have a capacity of two to three people. In addition, er is a small room with a sink. Work in progress is  guest room number 4.  Guests can make use of the spacious garden with terraces and  ponds and the forest plot.

table d’hôte

In addition to the B&B formula, guests can  also join  a ‘table d’hôte.   Then you are invited at the table with  the host and the  hostess. Chef Irene provides a varied menu (at demand also vegetarian). Depending on the season, local products and especially vegetables from the farm’s own vegetable garden are  served.

Lots to do

A hiking holiday complete with fantastic directions can be booked through Travellers.nl, a Dutch travel company (see addresses).

A few all-round  bikes are ready for guests, but bicycles and e-bikes can also be rented in Malmedy.

In winter there is an average of twenty days of snow and the cross-country ski trails open. The Baugnez slopes are a 10-minute walk from Le Grand Aleff.

Malmedy is a charming town with a wide range of shops and a museum (the Malmedarium) with occasional interesting exhibitions.  Stavelot is a historic town that was mostly spared in the 2nd world war – unlike Malmedy. The Abbey is worth a visit and here too there are sometimes interesting exhibitions.  In the  vicinity are the ancient spa town of Spa and the ‘rugged’ city of Liège.

The Spa-Franchorchamps circuit  is located at the hearing distance of Le Grand Aleff at Formula 1 races.

Finally, the German Eifel and Luxembourg  are nearby. Trips to Monschau (picturesque, but very touristy), Trier (interesting churches and Roman remains) and Clervaux (Family of Man photo museum) are favorites.

Things to do on and around Le Grand Aleff

The garden, ponds and the forest plot have a lot to offer in themselves. The garden has beautiful borders, a large vegetable garden and an orchard.  Birdwatchers get their money’s worth. If you sit on one of the terraces with a book (there is no shortage of reading material at Le Grand Aleff) and a glass of beer, you don’t have to leave….  .

You can help in the garden. In  the forest plot the little stream of Lamonriville can be followedd.  Peter  and Irene’s granddaughters are happy  to throw  little sticks in to let them float. Children can build swings, huts and tents. The little ones can go in the sandbox.

furniture woodshop

Le Grand Aleff has a furniture woodshop.   Peter van Dorp, host at Le Grand Aleff, is inspired by the American  Shakers  as a woodworker. The Shakers were a special sect in the 19th century. They were pacifists,   communards and against slavery. Man and women had equal rights in their communes. Among other things,  the Shakers developed a sober, but equally beautiful furniture style.  This style was a source of inspiration for Scandinavian furniture designers such as Poul Kjaerholm. Many of the furniture at Le Grand Aleff have this Shaker background.  And they are also for sale.  Individual courses or machine practicals in the workshop are on request.

Brasserie de Bellevaux

Near Le Grand Aleff is Bellevaux. Here the Schuwer  family runs a beer brewery: Brasserie de Bellevaux.  The beer has been critically acclaimed and praised (see addresses).  Fruit lemonades are also bottled.  The Brasserie is open on Saturdays and Sundays. The public can also get a tour of the brewery.
