Hiking/cross-country skiing in the Belgian Ardennes

Le Grand Aleff collaborates with Travellers Hiking Tours (https://www.travellers.nl/).  Travellers provides all-inclusive hiking holidays for the Ardennes 9and elsewhere) with detailed directions of 3 to 5 days with Le Grand Aleff as a starting point.

Hikers and cross-country skiers can also go directly to Le Grand Alef. From Malmedy,  in the heart of the Ardennes and close to the High Fens (Hoge Venen), you can walk along the GR 56 or GR 5 for a weekend or midweek. With sufficient snowfall (on average 20 days of snow per year – season from December to mid-March) you can ski on various circuits.  Ovifat, 20 kilometers away, even has ski slopes with drag lifts.

 

Weekend package:

  • arrival Friday afternoon / beginning evening, – 3 course dinner and overnight stay on the farm (a 2 person room with shower / bath and toilet or a 2 person room with sink)
  • Saturday – breakfast, walk of your choice of 15 to 25 kilometers from the farm towards Malmedy to the High Fens (GR 57) or towards Stavelot (GR5), packed lunch and pick-up service with return to farm, 3 course dinner and overnight stay;
  • Sunday – breakfast, walk of your choice of 15 to 25 kilometers from the previous end point or other route on the GR57 and GR 5, packed lunch and pick-up service return farm.

 

* in case of snow, a cross-country ski run can be run 500 meters from the farm; more than 10 cross-country skiing routes have been set out in the immediate vicinity; pick-up service to and from cross-country skiing routes

 

Midweek package 3 to 5 days, program such as weekend package.

 

All-in price: € 175,-per person for weekend (2 nights + bed / breakfast / dinner;  Lunch;  pick-up service in Ardennes); € 265,- per person for a midweek (3 nights + bed / breakfast/dinner; packed lunch;  pick-up service; extra day € 75,- p.p.).

Cycling package

Le Grand Aleff is an ideal starting point for cycling in the Ardennes. There are plenty of possibilities. Cyclists can practice climbing here (Le Grand Aleff is 4 0 0 meters high), mountain bikers will find tracks plotted through forests and meadows and for the ‘normal’ bicycle holidaymaker there is an extensive network of cycle paths on the former railway lines: the Ravel. These railway lines are flat and there is no hindrance from other traffic. There  are several charging points available  for e-bikers.

Here is an arrangement for inspiration. We are happy to help you think of other options, offer pick-up and drop-off services, can take care of renting bicycles, advise on approach routes, etc..

 

3-day cycling package Vennbahn (€ 195,- p.p.)

 

The Vennbahn runs on the former railway lines from Aachen via Monschau to Troisvierges in Luxembourg (see http://www.vennbahn.eu/nl/). The route is 125 km long. Aachen is easily accessible by train. The Heerlen-Aachen route can also be done by bike (approximately 20 km). From Troisvierges you can train back to destinations in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany.  .

 

  • Day 1: Cycling on the Vennbahn from Aachen – Monschau – Waimes – Malmedy . 80 km. Pick-up service from the former station in Malmedy to Le Grand Aleff 6 km away from Malmedy. Dinner and overnight stay at Le Grand Aleff.
  • Day 2: Breakfast and packed lunch drop-off at Malmedy station for a route across the Ravel to Trois Ponts via Stavelot. Return to Malmedy, total 50 km pick-up service. Dinner and overnight stay at Le Grand Aleff.
  • Day 3:  Breakfast and packed lunch drop-off at Waimes. Via the Vennbahn to Sankt Vith and Troisverges. Approx. 60 km.

 

An alternative route consists of departure from Maastricht via the Ravel to Liège (see http://www.eurovelo.com/en/cycling-in/belgium ), then to Spa – Stavelot on inland roads (no Ravel). From Stavelot via the Ravel to Malmedy (about 90 km). After staying at Le Grand Aleff and cycling trips in the area, return via the Vennbahn to Aachen.
